Tooth Replacement
Sometimes restoring a tooth is not an option because of disease or damage to the tooth. Missing teeth can jeopardize the health and stability of the opposing teeth, and in some cases cause sagging in the facial muscles, making a person look older. In most cases there are several options for replacing the tooth or teeth.
Bridge
A bridge is sometimes an option for filling the gap between one or more missing teeth. A “fake” tooth or teeth are adjoined to crowns placed on the adjacent teeth using the same technique as for a single crown. A bridge is a fixed restoration meaning it is not intended to be removed.
Dental Implants
Dental Implants offer a permanent solution to missing teeth. They are a very predictable and highly successful long-term solution for tooth replacement. A dental implant is a small titanium screw which substitutes for the roots of the missing tooth and serves as an anchor for a replacement tooth (crown). A dental implant restores the appearance of the natural tooth and also provides a feeling of stability.
Once the implant is ready for the restoration a crown will be placed. When multiple consecutive teeth are involved, an implant-supported bridge can be placed.
